Surrounded by mountains, this lake was artificially created in the 1970s for irrigation purposes, but today has an entirely natural appearance and is considered one of the most tranquil corners of the Gabala region. On clear days, the surrounding mountains reflect on the water's surface, making it a popular spot for photography. Boat and catamaran rides are available, along with the chance to try national cuisine at small restaurants along the shore. Forested stretches around the lake are pleasant for walking. It is a popular stop for family relaxation in spring and summer.
Located in the Caucasus mountains at 2,230 metres above sea level, this resort features one of the world's longest cable car lines (roughly 4 km), carrying visitors directly from Gabala city to the mountain summit. In winter, it offers over 20 km of ski slopes with rental equipment and professional instructors for skiing and snowboarding. In summer, the cable car takes visitors up to enjoy panoramic views of forested valleys and the distant Caucasus mountain range. Cafés and rest areas are also available at the summit. The resort is one of Azerbaijan's most developed winter tourism centres.
Built in 743 during the reign of Caliph Khalid ibn al-Walid, this mosque is the oldest in the Caucasus and the second-oldest in the South Caucasus and Middle East after the Juma Mosque in Derbent. Shamakhi served as the capital of the Shirvanshah state until the 12th century, and powerful earthquakes (especially in 1859 and 1902) repeatedly devastated the city, with the mosque rebuilt each time. It was burned down by Armenian armed groups in 1918, and remained closed to worship during the Soviet era — only being repaired in 1980. The prayer hall is divided into three separate sections, each with its own mihrab, a rare feature in mosque architecture. The minaret and domes are the result of 19th–20th century reconstructions.
