Surrounded by 12th-century fortress walls, Icherisheher has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000. The site has been inhabited since the Palaeolithic era and carries traces of Zoroastrian, Sasanian, Arab, Persian, Shirvani, Ottoman, and Russian presence throughout history. Thousands of people still live within its narrow, winding stone streets today, making it a living neighbourhood rather than just a museum. The iconic Maiden Tower is still shrouded in legend regarding its exact construction date and original purpose. Along with the Shirvanshahs' Palace, narrow shops, carpet stores, and cafés, a few free hours of wandering is well worth it.
Stretching along Nizami Street, this square takes its name from the numerous fountains scattered throughout it and is one of Baku's liveliest pedestrian zones. Extending up to the walls of Icherisheher, it is filled with cafés, boutiques, bookshops, and street performers. Locals come here to stroll in the evenings, and concerts and public events are held here often. The illuminated fountains create a particularly special atmosphere after dark. The Nizami Literature Museum sits nearby, an added stop for literature enthusiasts.
Formerly known as Kirov Park, this memorial complex is dedicated to those killed by Soviet forces during the 1990 Black January events, and later to those who lost their lives in the Karabakh war. Graves line a long lane, each marked with red carnations placed by visitors. At the end of the lane burns an eternal flame, opening onto a sweeping view of the Caspian Sea. Nearby stands the Mosque of the Martyrs, built in 1996. It is a quiet place for reflection on a painful chapter of Azerbaijani history.
Known during the Soviet era as Kirov Park, this site sits at one of the city's highest points and earned the nickname 'Highland Park' from locals. From here, a panoramic view opens over Baku Bay, the Boulevard, Icherisheher, and the Maiden Tower. The area connects to Martyrs' Lane and also includes the Azerbaijan Independence Museum. A funicular station carries visitors directly up from the Boulevard, though climbing the long stairways on foot is also possible. It is especially recommended at sunset, to watch the Flame Towers light up from here.
