Located in the Surakhani settlement, this ancient fire-worship temple was built in a pentagonal shape around a five-cornered flame fed by a natural gas seep. Its current form dates to the 17th–18th centuries, when it became a place of worship for Hindu, Sikh, and Zoroastrian merchant-pilgrims from India — Sanskrit inscriptions are still visible on its walls. The natural gas flow was cut off in 1969, and the flame is now maintained by a gas pipeline. It has operated as a museum since 1975, with cells displaying figures recreating the life of former pilgrims. Alexandre Dumas also visited in 1858 and described it in his book 'Journey to the Caucasus'.
This natural gas flame has burned continuously on the hillside since at least the 1950s (some sources say for centuries), and was even documented by Marco Polo in the 13th century. Unlike many similar natural flames (including the one at Ateshgah) which have since gone out, Yanar Dag continues to burn from its own natural gas source. The flame can reach up to 3 metres in height and is especially striking at night. The site gained protected status in 2007 as the 'Yanardag State Historical, Cultural and Natural Reserve'. It is one of the most vivid proofs of Azerbaijan's nickname, the 'Land of Fire'.
